The children’s story of Chicken Little was very cute … a little guy that believed the sky was falling.. Even though no one believed him, he was adamantly certain of what he knew to be true. Then, just a few years ago, the remake of his story into an animated full-length movie was even cuter. Still no one believed him and this time it was aliens who’d landed!

Maybe you’ve not met any aliens in your lifetime but hey, they could be anybody nowadays. If Chicken Little were among us today (or had been in the car with me this afternoon), his cry would’ve resounded again, only this time it would’ve been "Their Pants are Falling!!"

What’s up with all the ’almost-indecent-exposure’? If these dudes think it’s cute, cool or sexy they couldn’t be more wrong. Maybe they think they’re making a social statement? Perhaps; but it’s definitely not a fashion statement. What sagging pants do say are things like "I don’t care"; "Look at me, I’m ignorant of the fact that I’m inviting easy access for any homosexuals around" or "I’ve just gotten out of prison and this is my style".

More than a statement it’s a suggestion, an invitation, a self-degradation. The baggy, saggy pants scenario began in prison where belts were not allowed because prisoners would either use them to commit suicide (hang themselves) or as a weapon against others. But more than that it enabled ’easy access’ – the TRUE statement sagging pants screams out – for homosexuals. Wearing your pants sagging below your butt cheeks is an invitation to be "poked" and I don’t mean with a stick!

Women who’d normally give a good-looking guy the eye curl their nose up in disgust at the sagg look. When a man wears his pants this way, he is labeling and proclaiming himself to be wanting and willing for sexual action from another male. If you’re reading this post and you’re one of the many across the country that think it’s a hip-hop fashion statement, think again.

There are even many cities across the U.S. where legislature has been passed giving "saggers" tickets with fines imposed up to $500 – many with jail time, as well. And if you’re wondering at your freedoms, indecent public exposure has ALWAYS been a no-no, bearing consequences of both fines and time in jail.

You may argue that all that’s showing is underwear … but it’s called underwear for a reason – you wear it UNDER other clothing! And take a look at THIS picture! I do believe this is the next "step" in this rude and deliberately rebellious fad; how else could this photo been taken? Those pants are barely hanging on! And their butt cheeks have to be bare as well! If I saw these two walking down a street in my town, would I look? Of course…and I’d laugh until I cried at how stupid they looked – while I called the cops on my cellphone. Why should I be subjected to seeing these two idiots? It would be an invasion of my privacy and a definite example of indecent exposure. If there were children walking nearby, I’d seek to add child endangerment to the indecent exposure charge, as well. Actually, the court would count the i.e. charge as a felony in this case as opposed to just a misdemeanor.

Let’s see; in Ohio, indecent exposure is considered a misdemeanor sex crime conviction which will probably receive less than a year of jail time, a fine of about $250 – $500, community service, and either counseling or probation (the probation can be as long as 5 years). For child endangerment due to indecent exposure (a felony, folks!!) the possible penalties could include:

The Peter Pan Syndrome in America, Today

Times have really changed.

In my day, (in 1968) age 18 and out of the house and on your own couldn’t come at a swift enough pace. I couldn’t wait to become an independent young woman, making my own decisions, living free of parental “guidance” and becoming my own person. Today, there are more adult children living at home in reliance on their aging parents than you can shake a stick at. The fact that I just used such an old-timey cliche proves that I’m too old for all of this nonsense…and that is exactly what it is. BUT…I’m still in the fray and drama of it all. The question is, WHY???

Unfortunately the vote has been tallied and the grim results are in: there are tons of young people in their twenties and thirties that simply ”refuse to grow up” and accept the responsibilities of adult living. Yes, those same adult children who so unanimously cry out “I’m an adult” every chance they get to anyone and everyone within earshot are the very ones who continually look to their parents for support, both emotional and financial. Thus we baby boomers find ourselves in a precarious position – that of re-raising our children and many times THEIR CHILDREN also! I speak from experience, here.

The percentage of young adults living with parents as opposed to on their own would astound you; nearly 25 million adult children are living with their parents… most of whom have come back home after failing to make it on their own! <<this stat can be found in various places online, but I took it from notes I’d taken while watching a YouTube presentation on this very subject that highlighted the book “Setting Boundaries with Your Adult Children, Six Steps to Hope and Healing for Struggling Parents” by Allison Bottke. >> (We struggling parents search high and wide for answers; Bottke’s website, http://www.settingboundaries.com is a great resource which I highly recommend. Matter of fact, I should probably get this book!)

My personal issues and the myriad of dramatic details aside, I am one of those perplexed parents who happen to have an adult child who has come back to live at home. While I’m thinking to be helpful, I’m beginning to see that my offers of “help” have been well-intentioned hand-outs, instead of the hand-up I thought I was offering. There’s a difference between helping and enabling…and I’m just beginning to see the VAST differences. Stuck at what to do, I sought out others who’d been in my situation. It was the first of many wise steps I’m going to take.

If you’re among the thousands of parents struggling to survive your adult child/children who have come back home to roost (or who haven’t even made it out of the nest, yet) hope is at hand. You can achieve S.A.N.I.T.Y. in an otherwise totally chaotic and insane situation!

Let me ask: Does this sound a little familiar?

S.A.N.I.T.Y. is an acronym from Allison Bottke’s bestseller “Setting Boundaries”

What difference does a penny make? If you were a store clerk pocketing a pennies a day ... A LOT!

Ain’t A Lot … or Is It???

You find them everywhere – at strip malls, in parking lots, grocery and video stores, the corner newsstand - people who cheat other people on a daily basis without so much as a second thought. Nice enough folks; people who smile at other people, maybe even open a car door for an old lady. But cheats nonetheless.

There I was, standing in line with my A & W rootbeer in-hand. I don’t usually buy pop but it was on sale for just $.99 at the corner convenience store where I usually get my cappachino every morning. I smiled up at Earl, the clerk that was always so friendly, courteous and helpful, as I plunked down my dollar bill. “One dollar” he said, smiling back at me. Into the register went my dollar bill.

For a split second I did one of those infernal inner debates we gals tend to have with ourselves on occaisions such as this one. No, I’ll not say it; I decided against correcting him and went out the door to my car. As I buckled my seatbelt, it hit me; I’d allowed him to cheat me. The little devil on my left shoulder argued with a “It’s only $.99.”

The horned dude in red sitting smugly there was correct, but right and wrong were what you gott from eating the “other tree” in the Garden of Eden … the Tree of the Knowledge of Good AND Evil. So while he insinuated the insidious fact into my left ear, the other invisible guy – the one tsitting on my right shoulder (we’ll dress him in white – how novel) whispered “That’s right; but how many times a day on how many items a day, EVERY DAY of the year, does this happen?”

It occurred to me that the possibility of monetary gain that little corner store made on just that small, one cent cheat could be a very big deal. Think about it. That soft drink was only one of many items in that store priced at just 99 cents.

I’m conservative, so I quickly figured it up: three, 99 cent items sold in an hour = $.03/hour stolen change (I know it’s got to be lots more than that in a busy store like this one) … the store opens at 6:30 am and closes at 10 pm (that’s 15.5 hours/day) = about $.47/day, and this place is open all 365 days/year, which comes to about $169.72/year STOLEN FROM THE COMMUNITY that patronizes this place! If they’d done it all in one day, it would make the 6 o’clock news!

You can do the math from here on in; take all the convenience stores in just your neck of the woods PLUS the grocery stores (some of which are open 24/7/365). It’s a lot, trust me.

Just by counting up the stores right around where I live, say in a 2-mile radius (just off the top of my head it was a dozen or more…but I used 12 as my figure for this example), if this were just all that was finaggled from the unsuspecting, albeit allowing public, the theft amount would surpass $2036.70 a year!

You could get a little fanatical about it I suppose and then think about all the $1.99 items that the very same little sneaky trick is done with, but that boggles the mind and scrambles the little brains most of have left at the end of a busy day.
A measly 99 cents isn’t so measly when it comes to something like this …
so don’t you let it happen, again (I’m just sayin’).
