I’m not sure about you, but doesn’t it just suck major you-know-what when you’re at work, doing your job (and a damn good one, at that) and your boss happens ’by’ and just jumps in on you for what s/he imagines to be an injustice or ingratitude to them?

NOW IMAGINE THIS: You work for yourself … you’re self-employed as a separate business entitly within the ’space’ of another business, i.e., you RENT SPACE from an existing business owner who, for lack of a better description, salivates over any and every possible dollar s/he can get their greedy hands on and you get

verbally ambushed by this person!

Now, as anyone who rents space for a business knows, what you do, when you do it and how often you do it is entirely up to you…as long as you’ve paid the required rent amount, your work hours are your own. You can work as little or as much as you like because it is YOUR business, not theirs. They’ve not a care in the world regarding you unless you do not pay that rent, right? RIGHT!

This is how it is in the business world, period – unless you rent space from a flighty, unprofessional and slightly wacked hair salon owner. THEN you better watch out! Since choosing to work in the Salon/Spa environment, I’ve found that working with other women poses particular scenarios that are unlike any other. Jealousies over capabilities, reluctance to mini-mentor new salon techs (I personally believe this IS the salon owner’s responsibility) and general complaining go hand-in-hand with women meshing their personal and work lives with other women.

SOoooo … here are some great tips for the best ways to get along with other women to help you avoid the potential psychological pitfalls of an all-female workplace! Remember, some women find it difficult to get along with other women, not only because women tend to be “catty” in nature, but many read more into what is said while others simply over-analyze stuff because of personal nsecurities.

• Play nice. Sounds easier than it is, because our thought life is a major part of what (eventually) will come out of our mouth. So take care about thinking negative or hurtful things about others and you’ll be surprised at how “nice” you can be!
• Don’t be so independent! Use terms like “we” and “us” instead of “I” and “me” and you’ll create an ambiance of unity instead of an arena of competition.
• Try to keep judgments to a bare minimum. It’s hard enough to walk in your own shoes in this day and age – stressors are at an all-time high – but empathy for the gal/s that get whacked-out is a real plus.
• Keep opinionated conversation at bay unless you’re asking for their opinion/s. Bonding between females occurs more rapidly when you ask for an opinion rather than always giving your own.
• All women have some things in common: kids, mother-in-laws, noisy neighbors. Find a thread of commonality and you’ll develop the way to cement budding friendships that could last a lifetime.
• Last but not least, sincerely find something to compliment other workers on. Studies have shown that women, especially those in authority, are relatively insecure in their positions and even resort to bullying to maintain their status. Let these gals (and also those on the lower rungs of the ladder) know you genuinely appreciate them for who they are.

If you’ve a profession you love, anything than giving your “all” to get along with the gals you work with will shorten the gap towards disillusion and apathy; if you’re doing something you like but don’t necessarily love, chaos & tension between you and those you work with can push you over the edge to hating what you do every bit as much as your neighbor hates his job.

Get along at all costs …

your work time is a big part of your life, so make every minute count towards the positive. I’m sure you’ll agree that it’s a whole lot better being at work with friends than enemies.

And their butt cheeks have to be bare as well! If I saw these two walking down a street in my town, would I look? Of course…and I’d laugh until I cried at how stupid they looked – while I called the cops on my cellphone. Why should I be subjected to seeing these two idiots? It would be an invasion of my privacy and a definite example of indecent exposure. If there were children walking nearby, I’d seek to add child endangerment to the indecent exposure charge, as well. Actually, the court would count the i.e. charge as a felony in this case as opposed to just a misdemeanor.

Ever wonder what a smile – or the opposite, a sour countenance – towards a child when he/she first arrives at school does? I’ve noticed when I drop my second grade granddaughter off at school each morning there is a glum helper with an abismal expression on her face who opens the car door so she can get out. While I’m glad our local elementary school has such a high regard for safety, it would be preferable if a smile were added. Even a "you’re welcome" when my granddaughter says "thank you" each morning would be an improvement (I’m always so amazed at the lace of common manners in our school systems). I wonder what a concerted effort to smile and maybe … just maybe … a "Hi, there; so glad you’re here today" would do for each child at the start of their school day? With our overcrowded schools having to deal with adhd, problems at home, learning disabilities, behavioral challenges and disgruntled, underpaid staff, I’m betting it would make an amazing difference.

A smile is the second most contagious expression next to yawning and it’s always beautiful and endearing. While it’s common place today to run into folks wearing a sour expression, I like to smile because smiling does more than increase my face value; it ups my resistance to stress and illness.

Using your face to smile at others,

especially a child first thing in the morning, will help disperse sadness and dissolve the stress that so many children undergo both at home and school. The 26 muscles it takes to smile, as opposed to the 62 it takes to frown, can offer both you and your child an energetic and emotional shift into high.

But what if you just don’t feel like smiling? What if you are that greeter for the school bus and; your "job" is to meet and greet children as they arrive at school … but you’ve had a lousy night’s rest, the argument you had with your significant other is still weighing heavily on your heart. Conversely, hang around a happy, upbeat guy or gal for 10 minutes and feel the surge of "great" that sweeps you from head to toes.

A deep inner smile spreads within like a relaxing, warm beverage on a cold, winter’s night automatically causing negative energy to transform into positive … just like that. On the other hand, a scowl or blank I’m-so-bored-I-could-die look on your face will suppress your immune system by increasing stress and blocking good energy flow. Tell me again why someone would do this???

Physiologist Dr. Israel Waynbaum researched the effects of smiling; his findings showed facial muscles used to express emotion trigger specific brain neurotransmitters. Now emotion can be positive or negative. Smiling signals happy healing hormones such as ecstatic endorphins and immune boosting killer T-cells; frowning triggers the secretion of stress hormones. Don’t we have enough stress without creating more with a frown?

There is something called "Smile Therapy" but don’t pay for it, because it’s the best and free-bee-est way to help yourself relax and be content. It actually lowers the stress hormones cortisol, adrenalin and noradrenaline and produces hormones which stabilise blood pressure, relax muscles, improve respiration, reduce pain, accelerate healing and stabilise mood.

When you’re feeling down the stress hormones secreted with a scowl may increase blood pressure, weaken the immune system, increase susceptibility to infections, and exacerbate depression and anxiety. Now I ask you again … why would anyone not want to smile???

Forget buying self-help books to psychoanalyze yourself and mind-numbing audio tapes to hypnotize you into some enlightenment and inner peace; inoculate yourself from germs and boost your mentality, spirituality and emotional well-being all day long by smiling!
